Permanent residents must have a valid permanent resident card (PR card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. Without one, permanent residents may not be able to board.
PR card needs to be valid when permanent residents show it. If PR card expires, permanent residents will have to apply for a new one. They are still permanent residents if PR card expires.
New permanent residents don’t need to apply for a permanent resident card (PR card). Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC) will send one to permanent residents when they immigrate to Canada if they tell IRCC their Canadian mailing address. New permanent residents have 180 days after immigrating to send it to IRCC. If IRCC doesn’t get it in time, then they have to apply for PR card. There is a $50 processing fee for PR card applications.

Applicants should only apply for a PR card if:
PR card has expired or will expire in less than 9 months
PR card is lost, stolen, or destroyed
Applicant didn’t receive PR card within 180 days of immigrating to Canada
